Studio Ghibli’s “The Boy and the Heron”, directed by Hayao Miyazaki won the Golden Globe for “Best Motion Picture – Animated” on Sunday, beating out other animated features “Elemental”, “Spider-Man: Across The Spider Verse”, The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, fellow anime film “Suzume”, and Wish.

This marks the first Golden Globe win for Studio Ghibli & Miyazaki. In a statement released on X afterwards, Producer and Studio Ghibli Co-Founder Toshio Suzuki said that he was “very happy to hear the news that The Boy and the Heron has received an award at the historic Golden Globe Awards.” Suzuki also referenced the disasters that Japan suffered at the beginning of the year and added that “I hope the bright news of winning an award can bring a smile to everyone’s face, even if only a little.”

“The Boy and the Heron” is still currently in theaters in North America.
